Fort William

The train ride to Fort William was smooth and the scenery was amazing, although everyone keeps on harping on the Glenfinnan Viaduct, an hour away from Fort William, which is that stony bridge filmed in Harry Potter.

I arrived at my destination around 1030pm, and was welcomed by the dusky sky. It seemed weird, as all the shops were closed, the streets almost barren of people, yet the sun was barely setting above. My hostel was located quite near to the station, fortunately for me, and I checked in uneventfully.

I slept like a baby that very night, as I only woke up the next day at 9am, which was rather late as I thought of hiking up Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in UK around 1300 feet.

Nonetheless I only arrived at the visitor center at the foot of Ben Nevis at around 11 something and it was a bit too late. In addition to that I wasn't physically prepared for it. Climbing Ben Nevis isn't an easy task so said the visitor center. You need a map, a compass, warm clothing and etc.. I wouldn't want to end up later in the papers - stranded Malaysian rescued from Ben Nevis!

Hence, instead of climbing Ben Nevis, I went for a trek around Glen Nevis, which is pretty much the surrounding at the foot of Ben Nevis. The peak seemed surreal and foggy while the path upwards seemed to be precipitous. I was somehow relieved that I wasn't climbing that!

My trek path seemed never ending as I overcame small steams and bogs, through meadows and woods. I was totally excited when I came across a hers of highland cattle grazing. I didn't dare to go near them so I stayed at a distance just to take a few shots at them.

I decided to turn around after having trekked for 3 hours and reaching some abandoned cottages. So I turned around, heading back downtown to freshen up and forage dinner.

I had pasta that night and a glass of apple cider which I like a lot. Well, I actually drank it so I would sleep well and wake up the next day!
